Considering a Tummy Tuck After Your C-Section? Reno, NV
Body Procedures

Pregnancy undoubtedly takes its toll on the female body. If you deliver your baby via cesarean section, the physical aftermath can be even more disheartening. In fact, whether you’ve already had a C-section or you have one planned in the near future, many women dread the stretched skin and scarring that is typically left behind. Compared to a vaginal delivery, it can be more difficult to regain your pre-pregnancy figure after a C-section. This leads many female patients wondering what their options are in terms of a tummy tuck after cesarean delivery.

To help you understand what to expect, we’ve answered some of most frequent asked questions from recent or soon-to-be mothers regarding tummy tucks after a C-Section:

Can a tummy tuck be performed at the same time as a C-section?
The combination of a cesarean section birth and tummy tuck immediately after the surgery is known as a “C-tuck.” While this is certainly possible, it is not the best approach for every woman. You should carefully weigh the risks with your surgeon, which can include a greater chance of surgical complication (infection, fluid retention or blood clots), a more difficult recovery and potentially unsatisfactory results due to the very recent distortion of the abdomen during pregnancy.

How soon after a C-Section is a tummy tuck most commonly recommended?
For the lowest risk and greatest chance of successful results, a tummy tuck procedure should be performed after the body has completely from the C-section and has returned to pre-pregnancy weight and normal metabolism. If you schedule your tummy tuck too soon after birth, you may still be experiencing fluctuating weight, hormone and blood levels. Keep in mind that tummy tucks are not recommended until after your final pregnancy. So if you want more children, hold off on the procedure.

Are there different types of tummy tucks?
Traditionally there are two different types of tummy tuck procedures. Your decision may largely depend on your specific body composition and amount of excess skin.

  • Full Tummy Tuck – The most popular option for post c-section stomachs, as recent moms are able to flatten the entire belly and remove their c-section scar. If you have excess skin and/or stretchmarks above the belly button, this would likely be your best solution. Some moms combine their full tummy tuck with liposuction.
  • Mini Tummy Tuck – Best suited for women who are already back to a healthy or ideal pre-pregnancy weight. This surgical approach focuses on the lower abdomen but may also be combined with liposuction.

What benefits does a tummy tuck after pregnancy offer?
Whether you’ve had a single vaginal delivery or multiple C-sections, a tummy tuck can offer the following:

  • Removal of excess skin
  • Repair separated abdominal muscles (diastasis recti)
  • Removal of abdominal stretch marks & scars
  • Contour your waist
  • Fit into pre-pregnancy clothing
