Lipedema Treatment
Lipedema is a relatively common condition found almost always in women that is characterized by different symptoms as the stages of the disorder progress. Thought to be influenced by genetics and hormonal influences, the symptoms move through differing levels of pain, swelling, tenderness and the accumulation of fat beneath the skin. Different parts of the body can be affected, but the legs are the most common. Dr. Erez Dayan at Avance Plastic Surgery Institute provides lipedema treatment at his Reno/Tahoe, NV, office.
Lipedema means, “fluid in the fat,” which accurately describes this disorder. Lipedema is the accumulation of fat cells that have swollen in size and are resistant to any attempts at weight loss. These cells are filled with hyaluronic acid and water, giving the lipedema fat a consistency of gelatin and resulting heaviness. Its development is symmetrical and circumferential in the affected areas.
Leg Fat Removal
Treatments for lipedema generally focus on ways to reduce the amount of fluid present in the lipedema fat cells. Dr. Dayan can treat cases of lipedema with various forms of liposuction to remove the lipedema fat cells altogether. One of the most effective is tumescent liposuction. In this form of leg fat removal, a local anesthetic is used while a tumescent fluid surrounds the area of lipidemic fat. Then, a liposuction cannula is used to carefully target and remove the areas of fat.
Great care must be taken during this procedure not to harm the lymphatic system and surrounding connective tissue. Dr. Dayan is an expert at various forms and techniques of liposuction, including the tumescent technique. Recovery from lipedema leg fat removal is relatively quick, and results are typically very good. This procedure is performed on an out-patient basis at Avance Plastic Surgery Institute in Reno/Tahoe, NV.
Dr. Dayan and our aesthetics team can work with your physician and their efforts to combat lipedema through other techniques until liposuction is warranted.
